Lewis Carroll - Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898)
Please note that both these novels use characters outside of the usual range available from a
standard keyboard to create a "prettier" display of the text. This involved the use of
special HTML character codes known as "entities" which may not display on all browsers.
We have done this as an experiment, to determine whether the added effort involved is
noticeable or even visible to a majority of our visitors.
The special characters used are:-
| “ |
left double quote |
” |
right double quote |
| ‘ |
left single quote |
’ |
right single quote |
| |
non-breaking space |
— |
em dash |
If any of those appear as a string of numbers, or as a completely unrelated sysmbol, then I'm
afraid that your browser does not recognise that particular code and these two texts (only) will
likely look awful to you. We have checked the texts using IE 5.1, NN 4.74 and Opera 5.0
only.
If you do have problems, then please let us know by sending an email to wysardry@r67.net stating
which browser you have and which codes are causing problems. Please use the name for the
character rather then trying to copy the offending code i.e. "right single quote" rather than
"#8217".
Thank you for your patience.
Wonderland - Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
Looking-Glass - Through The Looking-Glass and what Alice
found there.
