WRATHCHILD - STAKK ATTAKK

By Andy Fairclough

The original back cover of STAKK ATTAKK:

While I can't quite proclaim to have been a Wrathchild fan from the very beginning, I did jump on the bandwagon at the end of '83 with the release of the bands supreme moment STAKK ATTAKK.

While some have criticised the production on this album, I think myself that it is great. Robin George (he of the excellent HEARTLINE single) managed to capture the sleazy and glammy atmosphere of Wrathchild and give them a unique sound. The guitar sounds tinny but its supposed to ... just listen to the production of SHOKKER for example ... terrific stuff.

The album opens with the fast and furious STAKK ATTAKK which has a slightly harder edge than the material that follows. TOO WILD TOO TAME neatly carries the party on from STAKK ATTAKK and is a blistering slice of pop-metal. Things only get better as surely the greatest glam anthem of the eighties - TRASH QUEEN follows. Again I think Robin George did a terrific job of bringing an extra dose (haha) of vitality to this song. Then its the blistering opening chords of SHOKKER, another great song. Track five is another strong title KICK DOWN THE WALLS in the same vein as TOO WILD TO TAME.

Its a shame that Side Two (or tracks 6-10) didn't quite match Side One but it has its moments. The cover of Gary Glitter's ALRITE WITH THE BOYZ is pretty good and SWEET SURRENDER is a cosmic mix of 80's glam and sixties pop. LAW ABUZER is a stomping number with a killer verse and WRECKLESS is a competent closer. TONIGHT is the only duff track on this great album.

Funnily enough on the original cover of the album if you read under the track titles scribbled out is DO YOU WANT MY LOVE?. I wonder if a Robin George produced version ever existed? I guess only the boyz know for sure. It would have been better to include this than TONIGHT.

The back cover collage is great. A mix of old Wrathchild photos including what look like some from the legendary ROCK'N'ROLL WHORE video. Did anyone ever see this? STAKK ATTAKK was repackaged in the mid-eighties with a more politically correct cover.

Do yourself a favour and hunt it down. Become a victim of the STAKK ATTAKK!!
