CONFESSION
by M. Graham

Summary: This is a story of Obi-Wan confessing his love to Queen Amidala, Royal Sovereign of Naboo. At this present time she has married Anakin Skywalker, been through the pain of him turning to the dark side, and also the birth of her twin children, Luke Skywalker and Leia, soon to be Princess Organa of Alderaan. So, what will Amidala's response be?

He crept into the throne room, looking for the twenty-five year old
Queen of the Naboo. He crept mainly because he was a wanted man, and knew what
danger he put the Queen into when he came to the pristine planet in the first
place. Using the Force, he reached out tiny tendrils, searching for the Queen's
presence.
"Obi-Wan Kenobi." She startled him.
"How did you know?" He pushed a strand of brown hair out of his eyes. His hair
was shabby, and getting long, as he'd not had it cut for a while; he'd also not
shaved for a few days.
"Anakin's tried to reach me. It feels different. And there are no other Jedi
left, Obi-Wan. Palpatine had them all killed." Obi-Wan stared at Amidala, who'd
stepped out of the shadows by the throne room window. She was wearing her throne
room gown, red, set off by the hand stitched gold embroidery and the faint glow
of the sein jewels at the base of the gown.
The dim afternoon sunlight glinted off the golden face frames, part of the
elaborate headpiece and the jewel of Zenda had a soft red glow, illuminated by
the sunset rays. Despite her regal appearance, and ten years age difference, she
still looked just as she did when dressed in the same gown when she was
fourteen. It surprised Obi-Wan even more, though, to see how peaceful she looked.
The heavy, traditional make-up hid her delicate features, but her eyes
betrayed her soul. Her soul was at peace.
"Anakin?"
"He's gone, Obi-Wan." He sighed.
"I'm sorry, Amidala."
"Don't be. Things change, Obi-Wan. They may change again."
"I wish that I had your optimism." Amidala turned to face him.
"We mustn't give up, Obi-Wan. If we do, he'll never come back." Obi-Wan sighed.
"You must know that he may not."
"I know." Her eyes were clear, her tone meant that the discussion was over.
"Amidala, you have to know . . ."
"Yes, Obi-Wan, I know." Amidala turned away, but Obi-Wan grabbed her arm. Tears
glittered in her eyes. He held her gaze.
"I just want to protect you."
"You've done that for a long time, now, and I thank-you . . ."
"Not as your guardian. As your friend." She smiled softly. Obi-Wan realised that
he wasn't getting his point across.
"As, more than your friend." Her eyes widened as realisation dawned on her. A
baby's cry startled them both. Amidala hurried to the small cot set up beside
her throne. She lifted the tiny child, brushing his downy blonde curls out of
his clear blue eyes.
"Hush, Luke. Hush, my child." Obi-Wan stepped up behind her. Luke fell silent.
"He looks like his father, Amidala." She nodded, silent as the child she held.
"You must take him away." He shook his head.
"No. I'm staying here, with you."
"You will not. You must protect my son." She walked away, no more than a few
steps.
"I love you, Amidala!" He blurted. She turned to smile at him.
"As I love you, Obi-Wan." She responded.
"No! More than that. Not as a friend . . . more." Her eyes once more betrayed
her.
"Could you ever, ever, fall in love with me, Your Highness?" He pleaded with
her.
"Obi-Wan, I, what should I say?" She asked, suddenly bewildered.
"Say you love me, Amidala." He took her hands.
"I can't."
"Sorry?" She squeezed his hands, then dropped them.
"I can't love you like that. Another time, another place, maybe. But not now,
Obi-Wan. I love Anakin, and I would never betray his love." Obi-Wan felt his
eyes fill, threatening to overflow. He turned away from the intent gaze of the
Sovereign of Naboo, and her son.
"Where is Luke's sister?" Amidala drew herself up a little more.
"She is now Princess Leia Organa of Alderaan." He spun to face her.
"What?!"
"Bail Organa adopted her."
"Amidala, you can raise your own children. I'll help you." Tears shone in her
eyes.
"You know, Obi-Wan, that the new Empire will search for you here. And if
Palpatine decides to destroy all of Anakin's links to the light side-he may
Come after me. I don't want my children to suffer my fate."
"I won't let them kill you." Amidala raised an eyebrow.
"And how will you stop them after you're dead? Who will save my son then,
Obi-Wan?"
"I will not leave you, Amidala."
"You will protect my son. I can take care of myself."
"Amidala . . ."
"I can't love you Obi-Wan! Not the way that you want me to." She handed him
the tiny bundle of her son.
"Amidala . . ." He fumbled somewhat with the baby. Amidala smiled and kissed
Obi-Wan.
"Take care of him. And . . . and train him. He will be a Jedi. I know that."
She smiled at her son.
"Goodbye, precious Luke. Find your sister, one day, and seek out Anakin,
your father. There is still good in him." She kissed his forehead.
"Where will you go?"
"To Alderaan. To say goodbye to my daughter." Obi-Wan nodded.
"Goodbye, Obi-Wan Kenobi. My daughter shall always know to call on you for
help." She exited the room, a quiet, dignified Queen.

Obi-Wan had delivered Luke to his half-brother, Owen and his wife, Beru,
almost three years ago. He had contacted Bail Organa and asked him to
protect the Queen whilst she was there on
Alderaan. He knew that she'd left Alderaan for Naboo before her letter reached him. She
told him not to come to Naboo, because Palpatine
and Anakin, now Darth Vader, were searching for him.
Obi-Wan knew that he couldn't stop her, or what was going to happen, so he
didn't go. He seemed to feel and hear what was going on, while it as happening.
Amidala was dressed in her Senate gown, the one in which she called the vote
of no confidence in Chancellor Valorum. Palpatine was the only one there.
Obi-Wan had expected Anakin.
"Your Highness, why so formal?" Palpatine asked. Amidala met his gaze.
"I only wish to show the Emperor how great my people are, and how much we
respect you to show you such."
"Why, Queen Amidala, is that a tone of sarcasm?"
"No, Emperor Palpatine. I know what is to be my fate."
The Emperor's eyes glinted maliciously.
"Yes, Royal Sovereign of Naboo, your time has come to an end, My Queen.
Your husband is mine, and I don't need you interfering with his emotions anymore."
"Do what you must, Palpatine, but you will not last forever. We will resist."
"I know." He fondled the lightsabre at his waist. "This will be the last time
that I use this primitive weapon. Prepare, then, Amidala, to meet your fate."
Amidala smiled.
"I am." The scarlet blade ignited and Obi-Wan cried out softly as he felt her
pain as it slid through her mid-section.
"I love you, Amidala!" He cried, sending the thought to her through the Force.
"Farewell, Obi-Wan." Then Amidala sent out her own thought, Kenobi felt it,
too.
"I love you, Anakin." He felt Palpatine's malicious grin, and Vader's shock at
his wife's death, light-years away.
"Master . . . !" His startled cry carried for miles.
"Yes, Darth Vader, she's dead. And it was a Jedi who did it."
"But there are no Jedi left. I saw to that myself." Palpatine smiled down at the
still form of the dead Queen.
"One. Obi-Wan Kenobi."  Obi-Wan felt Vader's hate reach out. And suddenly, Obi-Wan
cried. He cried for the loss of the Royal Sovereign of Naboo, Queen Amidala
the woman he loved; he cried for Luke and Leia and their loss; for those who had
died in the clone wars; for Anakin; for Qui-Gon and for himself. Then he wiped
away his tears and started out across the dunes, headed for the Judland Wastes,
beginning his role as Ben Kenobi, the hermit of Tatooine.
